How to Tell a Story in 5 Shots

Great storytelling doesn’t require a hundred photos. Sometimes, all you need is five. The “5-Shot Method” is a quick, powerful framework to help you create compelling visual narratives — even when you’re short on time or inspiration.

The 5 Shots to Capture:

  1. Wide Shot – Set the scene (where are you?)

  2. Medium Shot – Show the subject (who’s involved?)

  3. Close-Up – Focus on detail (hands, objects, emotions)

  4. Over-the-Shoulder – Add perspective (what are they doing?)

  5. Unexpected/Moment Shot – Capture spontaneity (emotion, surprise, movement)

Tip: You can shoot this in 10 minutes or less. The key is intentionality, not perfection.

Try this method during your next outing, at home, or even during a morning routine. Share your 5 shots and tag me @blueprints_backroads.
